Discuss the Ethnicity, Race in new cinema and how these elements Essay
Talk about the Ethnicity, Race in new film and how these components speak to the way of life character in new film - Essay Example Incalculable motion pictures have been made that set the white race idea on the platform. This is evident in numerous kind, setting and setting. Movies fortify the current winning social ideas (Kellner, 1995, as refered to in Brayton, n.d.) that allude to a working class white hetero male as the regulating figure (Brayton, n.d.). The idea of race is a social development and initially characterized by western individuals. The general thought brought by this idea is that the white individuals are better over those with shaded skin. This won during the colonization time frame where the colonizers were white individuals. Whiteness arrived at its top after the pioneer time however (Lopez, 2005). Consequently, having colonized grounds with individuals of color, the last were treated as sub-par and were made slaves. A similar treatment is concurred to individuals with earthy colored skin. The idea of whiteness was propagated much after expansionism as alluring and used to quell and underest imate the others (Lopez, 2005). The idea of ââ¬Å"personal whitenessâ⬠alluded to by W.E.B. Du Bois has been promptly and methodicallly acknowledged by bunches which were ââ¬Å"racialized, subjugated, vanquished and colonized,â⬠however who respect ââ¬Å"white force and white pretenseâ⬠as basic worries (Towards a Bibliography 2006, p. 5). Albeit various gatherings are attempting to counter this inconsistent social develop, there are still fragments in the public arena just as people who held such racial oppression idea. The idea of race can be found in numerous social materials, for example, stories, accounts, propensities, and so on and sustained in film (Critical Race Theory 20 11). Albeit socially developed, race has been regulated in the US through efficient and intentional activities, in this manner making social structures and results (Lipsitz, 1995). In film, race is built consistently as a presentation and ââ¬Å"understood as a lot of social tastes,â⬠yet not comparable to natural or social presence (Brayton, n.d., p. 63). The way of life of the rich privileged whiteness is depicted as the best possible standard (Johnson and Roediger, 1997, as refered to in Brayton, n.d.). It is played around the idea of purchaser decision (Brayton, n.d.). Scholastic discussions on race center around social personality, the foundations of the gathering, and how individuals consider themselves to be a social gathering (Bernardi, n.d.). Personality doesn't continue as before. It experiences nonstop change and change (Hall, 1989, as refered to in Bernardi, n.d.). White strength as a presentation is appropriately portrayed by Orwell (1936 as refered to in Lopez, 20 05) in saying that by wearing a cover, the face develops to fit with it. Moving Focus of Whiteness Racial development, as per Omi and Howard (1994, as refered to in Bernardi, n.d.), is a gap grounded on social and physiognomic boundaries that advises who ought to approach establishments. Racial development changes like personality (Bernardi, n.d.). During the early advancements in film, the idea of race was ruled by social Darwinism and genetic counseling wherein mankind is set in a ââ¬Å"hierarchy of human societies and historiesâ⬠with the Anglo-Saxons at the top, trailed by different Caucasians, the

Newham is the most ethnically different district in London, encountering the most elevated birth rate and having probably the most elevated pace of hardship, sick wellbeing and early passings (NHS 2009, pp. 91). As indicated by Aston-Mansfield.org (2011, p. 4) the latest information on work in Newham shows that it had the most minimal business rates in London, remaining at 56.2% in 2008-09 and 59.5% in 2009-10 in contrast with Londonââ¬â¢s midpoints of 62.7% and 68.1% for the two years separately. The assorted culture and elevated levels of hardship and joblessness mean presence of a few medical issues and wellbeing disparities in Newham and in this way lower wellbeing and health levels than Londonââ¬â¢s normal. Samson Triumph - Literature Essay Samples
Samson Agonistes is Miltons attempt to bring together the seemingly opposing worldviews of Christianity and tragedy. While some would contest that tragedy has no place in Christianity, Milton observed the tragedy in Judges 12-16, and, as an astute student of human nature, imagined the emotions Samson must have felt and the verbal exchanges that could have occurred between him and others. The result of Miltons conjectures is Samson Agonistes. If, as Chaucer writes, Tragedy is to say a certain storie, As olde bookes maken us memorie, Of him that stood in great prosperitee And is yfallen out of high degree Into misery and endeth wretchedly (http://www.dictionary.com), then Samson is indeed a tragic hero in the literary sense. Samson has clearly fallen from high degree, as his friends remember a great man, a HeriocRenowndIrresistable Samson (S.A. 125-126), the glory late of Israel, now the grief(179). Manoa recalls an invincible Samson (341), and the even the mighty Harapha admits: M uch I have heard/Of thy prodigious might and feats performd/Incredible to me (1082-1084). No one would dispute that at one time the Philistines feared Samson and the Israelites revered him. However, Samsons life changed dramatically when he suddenly metamorphosed from a glorious hero to an Ensnard, assaulted, overcome/ Poor, and Blind (365-366) prisoner. Samson languishes in a double darkness, lacking temporal and spiritual sight. To him, physical blindness is more bearable than the isolation he feels from God. Samson has tumbled headlong from the top of wondrous glory,/ To [the] lowest pitch of abject fortune (167-169).A character must have one fatal flaw before he or she can become a tragic hero; Samsons weakness was pride. Biblically, pride is one of the seven deadly sins that surely bring about ones ultimate downfall. Samson was endowed with superhuman strength, but by his own admission, lacked proportional wisdom (53-57). As his ego grew, his relationship with God dimin ished, until Swolln with pride into the snare [he] fell (532). Samson would have never been captured, blinded, and humiliated were it not for his burgeoning pride. In order for God to show Samson that He was really the one in control, He was forced, by Samsons own arrogance, to reduce Israels vainglorious son to nothing before he could be restored.A true tragic hero, Samson refuses to solicit help from outside forces. Samson vehemently refuses Manoas offer to pay a ransom for his release, and urges him to Spare the trouble/ Of that solicitation; let me here,/ As I deserve (487-489). Samson believes that he brought all his misery upon himself; therefore, he cannot accept help from another person (374-376). At the outset, Samson is immersed in self-pity, and has no desire to exact revenge upon the Philistines. Samsons meeting with Dalila (Delilah) jolts him from his Laodicean state. Up until this point, Samson refuses to show anger, and instead accepts his fate with abject resig nation. Dalila, however, kindles a fire inside of him, a fire that once ignited, consumes his despair and fuels his desire for retribution. Samsons first utterance to her, Out, out Hyaena, (748) displays that he has instantaneously broken free from his apathetic mindset. As Marjorie Hope Nicolson aptly observes, Samsons vigor is returningmore than he knows (362). In truth, Dalilas visit to Samson was the catalyst needed in order for Samson to bring down the Philistines temple. Samson grows increasingly confident during his discourse with Dalila, and, more importantly, feels God returning to him. Samson is now able to forgive Dalila, although it is at a distance (954). This act of forgiveness symbolizes that Samson has finally yielded to Gods authority, for his carnal desire is to tear [Dalila] joint by joint (953). Samsons forgiveness also releases him from any bonds he once had to Dalila and the Philistines, freeing him psychologically to do what he must in the temple in th e final scene.Samsons interaction with Harapha is evidence of the inward change that occurred in his conversation with Dalila. Harapha expected to find a dejected has-been hero, a former champion reduced to nothing more than reams of pale skin haphazardly slung over brittle, mortal bones. The Samson he encounters has been invigorated with renewed self-confidence and the assurance that God is with him again. Minutes earlier, Samson complaines God has cast me off as never known,/ And to those cruel enemies,/ Whom I by his appointment had provokt,/ Left me all helpless with th irreparable loss (641-644). Now, however, Samson boldly proclaims that Gods ear is ever open; and his eye/ Gracious to re-admit the suppliant;/ In confidence whereof I once again/ Defie thee to the trial of mortal fight,/ by combat to decide whose god is God (1172-1176) and is able to confidently back down the giant. If it were not for Dalilas intervention, the outcome of Haraphas visit would have been quite different.Milton portrays Samsons fall from grace as a tragedy, yet from a Christian perspective, the tragedy is not Samsons present condition, but Samsons disobedience to God. Samson was able to abstain from wine, but not the solace of Philistine women. Herein lies the Christian tragedy. Were it not for Samsons flagrant disregard for Gods laws, he would not be in his current predicament. Samson himself acknowledges that God justly inflicted the evils he is suffering upon him as punishment for foolish behaviour (S.A. 1169-1171). From the Christian viewpoint, Gods discipline is to be celebrated; it is a sign of his love. A tragedy only occurs if an individual refuses to heed divine correction. Samson chose to accept his punishment and determined to use his remarkable gift for Gods glory once more. Even his death is not a tragedy, as Samson has regained favour with God.Samsons untimely demise at the conclusion of the play could be seen as a tragedy, a triumph of Christianity, or a combination of the two. In a literary sense, Samson Agonistes is a tragedy in every sense. The flawed hero fights alone and dies alone. A Christian perspective sees the play as a beautiful illustration of Gods love: though he strayed from Gods laws, Samsons heavenly father welcomes him back and allows him to become a legend again in death. Here though, is the conflict. In order for Samson to be restored to God, he needed to relinquish his pride. God would not have returned Samsons strength any other way. For the play to be a literary tragedy, however, Samsons pride must cause his downfall. In reality, the tale, as it was intended, must be seen as two distinct stories. The first is a tragedy: Samsons pride brings his spiritual demise and is the cause of his suffering. The second is anything but tragedy: Samson restores his relationship with God and dies bringing glory to His name, justifying himself and his God in death. Thus, the two seemingly antithetical worldvie ws become one.Works CitedMilton, John. Samson Agonistes, and Other Shorter Poems. Ed. A.E. Barker. John Milton s Negative Portrayal Of Monarchy - 1142 Words
John Miltonââ¬â¢s Negative Portrayal of Monarchy in Paradise Lost In Paradise Lost, Milton argues against monarchy by portraying it in its purest form using the kingdom of heaven. Heaven is portrayed in Paradise Lost as a blatant monarchy. As with all monarchies, heaven does not offer true political freedom as it is ruled by one monarch, God. Milton portrays heaven to be a true monarchy and visibly displays the shortcomings of such type of government. He does this in various ways by comparing societies in hell and heaven, and the interactions between the ruler and their subordinates. Milton shows the differences in the societies where in one, all the subjects serve one supreme ruler, whose word is unquestioned and obeyed irrefutably, and in the other where debates take place and a leader is elected. Milton shows through Paradise lost that he disagrees with monarchy, and portrays the shortcomings of monarchy by showing that the rulerââ¬â¢s existence does not benefit the people of the society, and that god rules as a tyrant, and that there is more freedom granted in hell than in heaven. Milton shows that within the political structure, God is essentially a dispensable leader who is not beneficial to his subjects. For example, in the third book, God is aware that someone else must endure suffering in the humansââ¬â¢ stead. However, instead of volunteering himself, he announces to the angels that one of them must go down to earth and suffer in order to salvage the human race. Persuasive Essay On Gun Control - 1465 Words
After every highly publicized mass shooting, the topic of gun control becomes a political hot potato being juggled by the senators, congressman, and even the sitting president of the United States. It followed the usual pattern of condemning the shooter, questioning the ease in which the shooter was able to obtain guns, and with most mass shootings, proposing a ban on assault files used in the shooting. But within a few months, when the news agencies move onto other headlines, when all the hashtags on Twitter fall out of use, we forget about the gun control measures we were so passionate about and move on with our daily lives. George Washington worked hard to raise soldiersââ¬â¢ spirits and help them to survive the winter at Valley Forge. He did anything in his power to get the necessary supplies and best living conditions for his soldiers. George Washington lead the Culper Spy Ring which was vital in winning the war. But, training his soldiers was not the only thing that needed to be done. Although the soldiers were making due at the camp, conditions were f ar from perfection. He ordered that camp to be laid out in a way that best fit the soldiers. His instructions were to build a log hut 14 by 16 ft for every 12 men. He also ordered his men to build a bridge over the Schuylkill River to resupply his army more efficiently. Washington wanted the best for his troops, and in order have that he needed help from sources outside of Valley Forge. As early as September, 1777, Washington contacted Alexander Hamilton to ask for supplies such as clothes and blankets, which the soldiers were in need of. He desperately wrote a letter to congress to inform them of the harsh conditions, and asking them for any supplies that they would give to his troops. He wrote, From my soul... I pity these miseries, which it is neither in my power to relieve or preventâ⬠(Bruns, 63-64). Washington also sent men on large expeditions to get food for his soldiers. These men were successful and most likely saved the army. With all of these efforts combined, his t roopsââ¬â¢ supply dilemma eased and they got back on track for the war. Cloning6 Essay Example For Students
Cloning6 Essay Twenty years from now, as you are walking around the square in Wilkes Barre, you pass someone who looks exactly like you. They have your same brown eyes, round face, light brown hair, short stature, and even the same dimples you possess. Can you imagine the shock and even fright that may accompany such a sighting? The world was bewildered when the news that an adult mammal was produced without any eggs being fertilized with sperm. The results of Dolly surprised society and the idea that human cloning was possible created an uproar. Many people disagree with cloning for ethical reasons. Opponents want human cloning banned, saying it would only create problems. On the other hand, scientists say it could have other benefits such as duplicating embryos for in vitro and replacing a dying child (Masci 1). Others argue that human cloning would open doors for treatments of serious diseases. Cloning human beings could be beneficial, says Ruth Macklin, a professor of bioethics at the Albert Ei nstein College of Medicine in New York City (Masci 2). One way in which cloning could be beneficial in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process. Cloning Research may improve IVF, in which an egg is removed from a womans uterus, fertilized by a donated sperm, and then implanted into the uterus. Cloning could improve the effectiveness of IVF. Robert Stillman, one of the investigators in a recent cloning experiment, stated, If a woman has only a single egg to be fertilized, the chances of a successful pregnancy are only about ten percent. He continues, If more then four embryos are implanted, the success rates rise dramatically (Stillman 1993). Cloning embryos could split one embryo into four and then increase the pregnancy rate for many women across the world. Splitting the embryos would avoid the procedure having to be done numerous times. It would reduce the physical risks as well as financial costs. Cloning may also offer new options for couples who are unable to produce children t he normal egg-sperm way. If the couple doesnt want to use a surrogate mother or father, cloning gives the option of still having a child. However, the child would be an exact replica of one of the parents. Cloning could bring hope into many couples lives. Another possible use might involve cloning a son or daughter. This use of cloning could help couples too old to produce their own children. It can also help couples who have lost a child to a murder or kidnapping. Producing a child who is identical to their past might relieve some of the pain. In addition to aiding in reproduction, cloning might help find treatments for certain diseases. Studying how the cells work could lead scientists in the right direction. Some cells in the human body can only perform a certain function. If there were a need for that type of cell, scientists would be able to clone it so it will then perform its function that may be needed in the body. Learning how cells perform different functions can lead to d iscovering effective treatments for diseases such as cancer. Learning how cells work can also provide scientists with the knowledge of how tissues form. Cloning could form these tissues which would aid in transplants. Cloning tissues, organs, and even bone marrow could increase the success rate in surgery. All of these examples could be beneficial; however, many scientists still think cloning will cause problems. Wilmut, the scientist who cloned Dolly the sheep, feels that social and ethical arguments still outweigh the scientific benefits (Masci 3). Many researchers believe that there are other ways then cloning to find treatments for diseases and to provide strength in transplants. I cant at the moment honestly see anything in this (cloning) that is going to tell us something about humans that we cant find out in experimentally more acceptable animals like mice and sheep, says Collin Stewart, Director of the Laboratory for Cancer Developmental Biology at the governments Advanced Biosciences Laboratories in Fredrick, Maryland. .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db , .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .postImageUrl , .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db , .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:hover , .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:visited , .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:active { border:0!important; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:active , .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u47dc80ef155f6e25c715b37eaf8331db:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Crucible: The Lady Of Shalott EssayMany of the arguments by people who disagree with cloning point to the lack of data about its effects. 3 Problems of Teaching Oral English free essay sample
Some students cant find the right word when they communicate with others in English with the results that they have the impression they are poor at oral English. On the other hand, because of these problems, some of the students might give up this opportunity to learn and practice oral English. With the time flying, they become afraid to talk out aloud in the class. As a result, the less they speak, the worse their oral English will be. For this problem I did sumo research. According to the research, with my knowledge and theory I learned in university,I want to share my own idoas with you. The following lists of statements mainly give us the reasons why same of the students want to learn oral English well: To be able to communicate with people all over the world in an international language. To be able to read and understand a wide range of English sources for future purposes. We will write a custom essay sample on 3 Problems of Teaching Oral English or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page To have a better opportunity of employment, status, and financial reward in the job market in the future. To be able to read and listen to English media for information and pleasure. To pass the tests in the school. And pass the Entrance Examination. To survive abroad if given a chance to go to the West especially in English-speaking countries. From this survey we can see that students themselves need to learn English because most of them consider it as other purposes or they wish to improve their English ability to contact with international people. So students should learn to use language through communication. The task of language teachers is not to inforrn students of the language but to develop their ability to use the language far a variety of communicative purposes. II. Literature Review People found that some problems still existed in oral English teaching in the west region of our country. For example, the first one is putting more emphasis on examination rather than communication. The second one is neglecting the whole understanding of the text. The third one is speaking too much mother tongue in English teaching. The author conducted two oral tests for the students during the action research. From the test score, the author fully convinced that the students have been steadily making progress in their oral English during implement of their practice. The contents were convened into a written form with four aspects: pronunciation, intonation and rhythm; correctness; appropriateness; fluency. By comparison on these four aspects of the two tests, the evaluation is carried out obviously. In my experience of teaching, I fmd students actually have a strong desire to speak. They are reluctant to speak because they arc afraid of making mistakes and failing to find suitable words to express themselves well. If the teacher try to encourage them to speak by using as many ways as possible and creating a good language speaking environment, students will speak actively, willingly and naturally. speaking as one of the four skills, this can be mastered only through practice. Practice makes perfect. Language we used should be fluent and precise, the format should be correct, suit the requirements of the thesis, the structure should be complete, and the arguments should be sufficient and reasonable, the points should be very clear. It is well known that no student can be said to have learned an item of language until he or she uses it naturally and automatically irt an appropriate situation, and this should be the first importance in oral facility. We must make our daily talk accurate, fluent and appropriate. According to the oral English teaching, in west of China, middle school students are supposed to speak oral English in their daily life. At the first, students are expected to be able to express daily onversations in simple English, to ask and answer questions based on some reading or listening material, and to talk briefly for about two minutes about the content of a text after one or two minutes prior preparation. Then, students are expected to be able to carry on conversations with native English speakers not only about daily life but also about social issues. Given some reading or listening material, they should be able to retell the content and discuss the topic for three to four minutes with one or t wo minutes preparation irt advance. III. Analyzing the Reasons of Poor Dral English in Middle School of West Region. . Too timid to speak aloud in the class One way to tackle this problem is to find the root of the problem and start frorn there. In fact, most of the students are afraid to speak aloud in English in their class, or they feel really shy about talking in front of other students, then one way to change this situation is a create and establish your own classroom way where speaking aloud in English is the norm. One way to do this is to distinguish your classroom with other classroorns by arranging the classroom tasks differently in groups, and you can also decorate the walls through English posters. At beginning you should encourage your students to speak in English whether their language is right or wrong, and encourage your students to ask questions in English. Of course, you should not give up this method by yourself. Giving positive feedback also helps shy students to speak more. Another way to get students motivated to speak more is to allocate a percentage of their final grade to speaking skills and let the students know they are being assessed continually an their speaking practice in class throughout the term. And encourage your students to speak out in English is to speak in English yourself as simple as possible in class. If you are shy about speaking in English, how can you expect your students to overcome their fears about speaking in English? Dont worry if you are not completely fluent or dont have that elusive perfect native accent, as Swain wrote We learn to speak by speaking and that goes for teachers as well as students. The more you practice the more you will improve your own oral skills as well as help your students improve theirs. . Boring activities make students keep silent A completely different reason for student silence may simply be that the class activities are boring or are pitched at the wrong 1eve1. Very often our interesting communicative speaking activities are not quite as interesting or as communicative as we think they are and all the students are really required to do is answer yes or no which they do quickly and then just sit in silence and avoid speaking more. So maybe you need to take a closer look at the type of speaking activities you are using and see if they really capture student interest and create a real need for communication. 3. Students dont know the importance of practice Sorne students do not know the importance of their own practice. Language- learning is just like learning swimming, you are not able to learn to swim by reading books. So is earning a language or skill, the most effective way is to practice it in the authentic situation with authentic media.

The news of the engagement by Arnold Bennett, and Tony Kytes the Arch Deceiver by Thomas Hardy Essay Example
The news of the engagement by Arnold Bennett, and Tony Kytes the Arch Deceiver by Thomas Hardy Paper Hardy was the first major writer to focus on the countryside but when he wrote his stories, times were changing and the Industrial revolution affected the countryside population. Bennetts writing forms a contrast to Hardy; his story is centred in the five towns (the pottery towns) around Stoke on Trent. His story reflects the change of the young man returning home from London and the big city life. Philip Durance is returning home at Christmas time from London. He has come with news of his engagement and he did not want to just write a letter to his mum because he did not know what to write. Philips relationship with his mum was quite close because he writes to her every week telling her of most of his doings. When Philip visited his mum she was more excited than usual. Philip finds it difficult to talk to his mum about Agnes his fiancà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½e and his engagement because his mum tells him first of her engagement. So Philip feels that he does not want to spoil his mothers news, because she is so happy and he does not want to take the spotlight away from her. Tony Kytes says things that are amusing they are; singing a song as if it was a hymn, he sweet talks the girls saying how could he refuse them a lift and saying he never noticed how pretty the girls are. The funniest thing that Tony does is get all the girls to hide in his wagon. It all started by Tony riding around town in his wagon when he is asked by the girls for a lift one at a time, and every time a new girl gets in the wagon the previous girl hides, so at one point he has got 3 girls in the wagon at once. Compare the views of human nature advanced by two ideologies of your Essay
Compare the views of human nature advanced by two ideologies of your choice - Essay Example One of such theories was developed by Marx, on what is popularly referred to as Marxism. The theory of human nature developed by Marx primarily criticizes the conception of capitalism and communism, which are popular political ideologies. On the other hand, Aristotle describes the human nature as one that is unique and is notable by diversity. This paper compares the views of human nature as described by Aristotle and Marx. Aristotle maintains that man is naturally blind to morality, implying that human beings are amoral creatures. At the same time, Aristotle argues that man is born without knowledge and, therefore, morality cannot be a part of the human nature (Kupperman, 2010, p.4). In the course of his life, man continues to acquire the knowledge of morality. In this argument, Aristotle is not only making the argument that the nature of man is amoral but also the fact that morality is a post-acquired knowledge in the due course of life. The statement is backed by Aristotleââ¬â¢s later argument that wickedness is voluntary, and no man is born evil. It is the rational choices that human beings make after birth that make them either moral or immoral. Another important aspect of the human nature put forward by Aristotle is the idea that man is a hedonistic being. This means that he can shun the pain and pursue pleasure by nature. The man described by Aristotle is capable of dreaming, sleeping, and is anxious about the old age. He also lives in a political state and is continually fascinated by the animal world. Man is also naturally religious and tends to look at heaven with hopes of a better destiny. Aristotle believes that man is a rational social animal and that both the body and the soul were essential parts of the nature of man (Ward, 2005, p.290). At the same time, Aristotle maintains that; without a society, man would not be human. The self is mainly discovered through the natural potentialities

People Environment and Business - Essay Example This confirms that natural resource exploitation has the capacity to cause imbalances in ecosystems as wells other effects, which may not be reversible. This informs this study on possible environmental effects that Iran experiences in the process or because of exploiting oil. General issues that are of concern to Iran have been vehicle gaseous emissions, operations by refineries as well as effluents by industries, which together contribute towards air contamination, water sources pollution as well as general environmental degradation. For instance, the city of Tehran in Iran ranks among the most polluted cities across the globe. Among other major environmental concerns, that are of great importance and which are being analyzed in depth are issues of environmental pollution from exploitation of oil as a natural resource in the country (Narimisa and Basri, 334-337). The world is increasingly in need for oil and associated products, which causes the rate of exploitation of this natural resource to increase as days go by. The ever-increasing uses into which oil is put into raises the demand of this non-renewable resource. It is widely used for industrial purposes, as a source of fuel to both domestic users as well as industries, in production of electricity as well as for locomotives, which accounts to the highest use into which oil is put. In studies on assessment of social impact associated with exploitation of oil in Iran this study projects future affects the environment in continued exploitation of the resources. Iran is however ranked among the great producers of oil and has amassed great economic wealth through the exploitation of oil globally. In concentrated efforts to study the case in Iran, we investigate oil refinery at Tehran, which has major environmental effects on emissions of gasses, solid wastes, industrial effluents, odor, aesthetic and visual complains as well as noise. However, it is worth understanding that the case study of Tehran oil refini ng is a representation of many other industries within the larger Iran. Air pollution within the country as associated with oil exploitation result from firing processes, furnaces, steam boilers, compressors as well as distillation towers among many others. The major air pollutants from oil exploitation and refining include carbon oxides, oxides of nitrogen and sulfur, ammonia as well as hydrocarbons among others. Water pollution emanates from discharging of the industrial effluents into the water sources either directly or indirectly through contaminating underground water, which later contaminates the surface waters. The process of producing sludge, coke, cracking as well as the process of separation of water and oil produces solid wastes which without proper disposition results to degradation of the environment. Over and above all the adverse effects on environment, that exploitation of oil in Iran brings about is the demolition of ecosystems. Evidence shows that the exploitation causes mass marine as well as land environment degradation through excavations, which are associated with destruction of aesthetic value of the country. The Claim of English women to the Suffrage Constitutionally Considered Essay Example for Free
The Claim of English women to the Suffrage Constitutionally Considered Essay 1.Classification a.Text type: This is an article published in the ââ¬Å"Westminster Reviewâ⬠in 1867. b.Cultural and historical background: It dates back to 1867, Victorian period (1837-1901), which corresponds with the reign of Queen Victoria. This was an extremely exciting period, sometimes called ââ¬Å"the second British Renaissanceâ⬠. It was published after the amendment to the Bill presented by John Stuart Mill, backed up by 1500 signatures, including some of the most remarkable women at that time. His petition for womenââ¬â¢s suffrage was rejected. c.Author: Helen Taylor was born in 1831. Her mother, Harriet Taylor, was particularly politically active, supporting womenââ¬â¢s rights. As John Stuart Millââ¬â¢s step-daughter, Helen helped him with his books and articles after her motherââ¬â¢s death. In 1865 Mill got a seat in the House of Commons and presented a petition in favour of women having the right to vote in 1866. His petition was defeated. In 1967 she published this article and she was a founding member of the London Society for Womenââ¬â¢s Suffrage. d.Addressee: I think that this article was thought to act as a support document for the incipient womenââ¬â¢s suffrage movement. She was preparing the ground for a more formal petition, as though Millââ¬â¢s petition containing around 1500 signatures was turned down. She was echoing the women petition while societies demanding womenââ¬â¢s vote were flourishing all around the country. I think this was intended to be a declaration calling for the women right to vote. 2.Analysis Miss Taylor first published it as an anonymous article in the ââ¬Å"Westminster Reviewâ⬠in January 1867 and it was reprinted afterwards. She based her position on the idea that since women were fully allowed by English law to hold all kinds of properties, so they should to vote in the election of the Parliament representatives: ââ¬Å"This petition [â⬠¦] sets forth that the possession of property in this country carries with it the right to voteâ⬠. So it was that even American politicians fought against slaveââ¬â¢s right to vote based on their inability to hold property. According to Taylor, it was ââ¬Å"hard to see how, if the law of England endows a woman with property, it can, [â⬠¦] deprive her of the essential privilegeâ⬠. Following the legal positivism developed by thinkers such us Jeremy Bentham (Westminster Review founder), she based her claim on constitutional grounds stating that women were only asking for the recognition of rights that ââ¬Å"flew naturally from the existing laws and institutions of the countryâ⬠. She stressed the importance of this social movement, mentioning the number of womenââ¬â¢s signatures (fifteen hundred) which backed up the official petition presented to House of Commons by Mr. J. S. Mill in 1867, demanding the vote for women. In addition, she set a 10 to 1 ratio. For each woman that signed the petition, there would be ten that also supported the idea but for several reasons, were not able to express themselves. She thought that it should be taken into account when considering the petition and signatories should be regarded as representatives of larger social body. She then referred to what she called ââ¬Å"domestic despotismâ⬠, which did not allow women to openly speak their minds. Apart from grounding her petition on the British Constitution and the already recognized right to property and its management, she highlighted that women were perfectly adequate for the government and management as female sovereigns were. Ironically, Queen Victoria, was openly opposed to such kinds of political concessions to women. ââ¬Å"Universal Suffrageâ⬠as the word said, implied the personal representation, which comprised both men and women. That brought up the theory of ââ¬Å"class representationâ⬠according to which all mothers, wives and women were part of a very large group by virtue of their female condition. Again, she underlined the odd position in which laws placed women who were property owners. She described that as an ââ¬Å"anomaly of the systemâ⬠, as anyone entitled by law to hold and manage property, should also be able to take part in the political decisions, as they may have side-effects on their properties. She thought that this political exclusion was due to a prior period when women were not able to own properties and as a result, they were not included among the voters. English law ââ¬Å"has long ago refused to drive women into marriage, as sheep are driven into a fold, by shutting every gate against them but the one they are intended to go throughâ⬠, this comparison drew a very clear image of the kind of ââ¬Å"anomalyâ⬠Taylor was talking about. Women needed to be able to protect their possessions within the legal frame, and one of the very first steps was to be given the right to choose their representatives at the Parliament. She also analyzed what would happen if this petition was admitted and the vote to women was granted. She thought that in a way, men were afraid of losing their decision power and that was why the objected to the petition. They should not be afraid of independent women, as they were already acting that way, governing their own lifes and properties. Occasionally voting, will not make any difference. Besides, she thought that politics at the time were full of ââ¬Å"domesticâ⬠subjects, such as education, labour regulation, water supplies, etc. 3.Conclusion The Industrial Revolution (a period from 18th to 19th century) dramatically changed everydayââ¬â¢s life in the United Kingdom. Women taking part in the workforce with new kinds of jobs, tough working conditions, etc. were a challenge for the traditional idea of the womenââ¬â¢s role, and its relationship with the environment. Traditionally the womanââ¬â¢s place was the house, children and home caring, playing an absolutely secondary role, subordinated to her husband. This article can be considered one of the major texts regarding the role of women in the Victorian society and the controversial right of womenââ¬â¢s suffrage. Taylor made a unique contribution to the suffrage movement. Apart from playing an active founding role in different womenââ¬â¢s suffrage associations with this article, she gave visibility to an old claim, organizing a widespread campaign getting thousands of signatures to back up the formal petition. In my opinion, Helen makes a mistake with regards to her consideration of the legal position of women and property, particularly in the case of married women. They were not able to exercise any rights over their property most of the times. It was their husband the one entitled to do so on her behalf. That ââ¬Å"full propertyâ⬠she mentions as basic pillar for her theory is not such, except in the case of some widows and single women. However, Taylor was a pioneer in the movement for womens rights and her contribution was valuable in the battle for equality in the context of a shaky era such as the Victorian. This can be considered one of the milestones regarding the role of women, as it was one the early demands for womens suffrage in the United Kingdom.

Inventory of the lost :: essays research papers
An inventory of the lost Suppose your father was working high in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. You have been told by authorities in New York City what intuition told you as you watched the two towers collapse: Your father is dead. Yet that conclusion is a municipal bureaucracy's intuition, no more certifiable than your own. Your father's remains have not been found. He is presumed to have been killed largely because, first, he could not possibly have survived and, second, he has not been seen since. So your grief is compounded by a question as illogical as it is impossible for you to shake: What if, somehow, he escaped? What if, in some perhaps tragicomic way that screenwriters might never imagine, he managed to get out alive? This sort of bizarre ending doesn't often happen in real life, of course. Extremely rare is the victim of war, or of violence, or of some other tragedy, whose remains are never found and identified. If survivors of those victims get the terrible pain of loss, they invariably get proof that the victim is, irrefutably, deceased. Not so, though, for many survivors of the 2,792 people killed at the World Trade Center. Working with body parts retrieved from mountains of rubble, the office of New York City's medical examiner has confirmed the identities of 1,518 of those World Trade Center victims. But scientific tests have failed to link any of the body parts to the more than 1,200 other victims. The majority of those body parts exhumed from the debris - 12,000 of almost 20,000 fragments - are a tragic inventory of the lost. Efforts to match them to known DNA samples provided by the families of victims - strands of hair lifted from combs left at home, for example - have failed, often because the retrieved body fragments were so badly incinerated, crushed or deteriorated that their DNA was unknowable. Unknowable, that is, using today's DNA technologies. Faith in future technologies has led to a remarkably smart way of dealing with all those still unidentified body parts. They are being dried, individually vacuum sealed and packaged for a time when new means of identifying human tissue may tie them to specific victims. Under a protocol developed by city officials working with representatives of victims' families, the remains will be interred in a memorial at the site of the twin towers.

James Baldwin
Language is a very controversial topic. The way many people hear language and judge others based upon it differs from place to place. Personally, I completely agree with James Baldwin. In his defense, language is what the general population uses to stereotype, it leaves us identifying each another, and language also can cause social exclusion. First off, language is widely used to stereotype others. One can judge others based on their accent, choice of words, or grammar. For instance, during James Baldwinââ¬â¢s time a Man with a sophisticated British accent was seen as an educated man with a decent income. Language also allows people to stereotype people based on where they come from. For example, people with bad grammar and used words such as ââ¬Å"ainââ¬â¢tâ⬠or ââ¬Å"yââ¬â¢allâ⬠typically are from the southern area of the United States. Next, people identify others personality based on word choice and grammar. George Bush, one of our very own U. S. residents, had a southern accent, and had he not been president, people would have most likely negatively identified him. They would assume he is a dumb, ignorant southerner because of his views. However, sharing his views as the president allowed him to be respected with the views either way, while some people disagreed with him, many saw him as a leader which would be very different had he been your average joe. Last but not least, language can lead to social exclusion. Because of poor language on someoneââ¬â¢s part, others can exclude them. People can be excluded because of bad language that makes them sound dumb, or even language that makes them sound too smart like a know-it-all. Similarities in language create cliques among people and it is very easy to be shunned out of these cliques if one is noticeably different. To recapitulate, language is the cause of many stereotypes and differences in society. Language can be used to stereotype, or it can be used to identify others. Also, it can lead to social exclusion because of differences in language. All in all, language is a huge contributing factor to society

The Core Responsibility Of A Corporation - 1752 Words
For many years, researchers held that the core responsibility of a corporation was to provide shareholders with financial returns. Carroll (1979) proposed that organizations have other types of responsibilities towards the society. In Carrollââ¬â¢s view, at some stage society has economic, legal, ethical, and other expectations. The essential part of Carrollââ¬â¢s definition of CSR is that a company has four primary responsibilities: to be profitable, observe the law, be ethical, and conduct discretionary activities. Drawing on those four responsibilities Carroll (1991) created a four-level pyramid of CSR and stated that the CSR policy of a company must include all of them. Carroll placed the economic responsibilities at the base of the pyramid, since for a company to operate successfully, it must have a financial return. On the second level were the legal responsibilities which in order to be fulfilled corporations must pursue their economic objectives (Carroll, 1991). Placing the economic and legal responsibilities at the bottom of the pyramid was reasonable because those two are fundamental for a company to be successful. The ethical responsibilities were placed on the third level of the pyramid suggesting that organizations ought to conduct their businesses operations in a fair and appropriate way and ought to protect the stakeholdersââ¬â¢ moral rights (Carroll, 1991). The distinction between the legal and the ethical responsibilities is that in the former the norms areShow MoreRelatedTyco Organization1214 Words à |à 5 PagesTyco Corporation Management 330 March 20, 2009 Introduction During the course of this paper one will see addressed several issues of responsibilities that the Tyco Corporation must deal with.
